I want to trumpet, Chapter 9

9. Playing songs with notes

“OK Alexander, now that you know how to play different notes on the scale, you can play songs. And the more songs and games you play, the better you will read and play music.”

“I’m ready. Where do we begin?”

“Let me give you the big picture.”

Papa drew a diagram on paper showing what to remember when playing the trumpet.

  1. Breathe a steady flow of air through your lips.
  2. Keep the muscle above your stomach tight when playing.
  3. Don’t press the mouthpiece into your lips. Blow your lips into the mouthpiece.
  4. Hold your trumpet properly.

Papa drew a second diagram indicating what to practice.

  1. Play the chromatic scale every day tonguing and without tonguing.
  2. Play simple songs every day.
  3. Learn to play Herbert Clarke’s technical studies.
