Of the many excellent trumpet books I have practiced, Harold Mitchell’s Trumpet Method is the best match for me. I use other books to supplement practice on a particular technique.
It is a four volume set of eighty-two lessons. It begins with lessons for the beginner but progresses to exercises that challenge the experts. Al Hirt and other professionals recommend the Mitchell’s Method books.
Each of the four books contains a mix of exercises in each lesson, so as the student advances through the lessons, he is developing simultaneously air control, tone quality, endurance, lip flexibility, tonguing, sight reading in all meters and rhythms, and range up to G above high C while learning to play in all the keys.
Each lesson is just long enough to tire but not fatigue the student which is an important part of learning how to practice the trumpet. And Mitchell adds commentary and advice through out his book.
Keith Wood of Naturally Brass recommended to me Mitchell’s trumpet books, and they helped me accelerate my learning of the trumpet like no other. This personal experience is why I highly recommend Mitchell on Trumpet.
